Oracular Oriole
Get ready, Ubuntu fans! Canonical has just dropped the draft release schedule for Ubuntu 24.10, playfully nicknamed ‘Oracular Oriole’. Mark your calendars because the final stable release is set to land on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
Over the next six months, developers will be hard at work, with the first beta version of ‘Oracular Oriole’ expected to spread its wings on September 19. A release candidate will follow on October 3, helping to squash any last-minute bugs.
Like its predecessors, Ubuntu 24.10 is a short-term release, which means it’ll enjoy a brief but sweet 9 months of support. This timeline syncs up perfectly with the release of Ubuntu 25.04, which is slated for April 2025.

- Feature Freeze: August 15
- User Interface Freeze: September 5
- Kernel Freeze: September 26

If you’re eager to get a sneak peek, daily builds of Ubuntu 24.10 will be available any day now. Keep in mind, though, that these early versions can be a bit unstable as developers work out the kinks from syncing and importing packages from Debian.
So, what’s new in Ubuntu 24.10?
Expect to see Linux kernel 6.11 (or newer), the shiny GNOME 47 desktop, and likely some enhancements to the Flutter-based desktop installer. There’s even a chance we’ll see the return of the Desktop Security Center that made a brief appearance during the noble cycle.
Plus, fingers crossed, the issues that delayed the all-snap immutable Ubuntu Core Desktop in Ubuntu 24.04 might finally be ironed out, making it ready for its official debut.
